The first Breast Cancer Register was a project of the Auckland Breast Cancer Study Group that was established in Auckland in 2000 to monitor and evaluate breast cancer diagnosis, treatments and results for patients in the wider Auckland region. This information will be used to determine how breast cancer is being managed and subsequently which treatments and approaches result in the best outcome for women. All private and public breast clinics in the greater Auckland region participate.

The register includes all patients with breast cancer/DCIS first identified after June 2000 in the wider Auckland region. All participants are required to sign a consent form before being included in the study. The current consent level is at 84% of all eligible women.

The Foundation has been supporting this project over the past six years and has committed to another three years of funding bringing total financial support to $612,000. The Foundation has also contributed to the recent roll out of Breast Cancer Patient Registers in both the Waikato and Canterbury (Phase 1) regions and has begun preliminary communication with the Wellington and Otago regions.

Outcomes

The data collected by the Register can:
•    Describe patterns of care and utilisation of various aspects of care
•    Identify the effects of mammography, outcomes without treatment and effects of various treatments
•    Contribute to expected outcomes for New Zealand’s population, direct efforts to achieve optimum patient outcome, and improve use of the health sector dollar.

For further information and analysis of the data collected to date by the register, download the latest Annual ‘Breast Cancer Register’ review for participants first diagnosed June 1, 2000 to December 31, 2005).
