Registrations can be made by phoning 0800 902 732, leaving your name, contact phone number and number of people attending. Alternatively, you can just come along on the night. You can also register via email enquiries@nzbcf.org.nz.

The Lion Foundation is a premier supporter of the Foundation providing an invaluable annual grant to fund the nationwide Community Education Roadshow programme.

Each Roadshow is advertised in local papers, on radio stations and on the Foundation’s website. Posters are also sent to local organisations and businesses together with a mailout to the Foundation’s database. The free seminars have attracted hundreds of women each year and many men who want to know about breast health for themselves and their loved ones, and what to do if they are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Our Roadshow programme achieves many positive objectives:

  • Awareness – the advertising for the Roadshows serves as a reminder to women to be breast aware and also reiterates the Foundation’s key life-saving messages.
  • Call for action – women and men are motivated to attend the Roadshows, to find out more information and gain knowledge about breast cancer and breast health.
  • Layering effect – women take home information and free resources from the Roadshow and share their knowledge with family and friends throughout the community.
  • Life saving – hundreds of women each year and many men have attended the Roadshows and ultimately now have the knowledge to be proactive about their breast health and when appropriate encourage and support others to be proactive.

Community Education

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation also carries out FREE breast health presentations to schools, sports clubs, corporates, health conferences, women’s groups, tertiary institutions plus many other workplaces and groups throughout New Zealand.

The Foundation believes that raising awareness of breast cancer issues and educating all women about breast health is paramount. Approximately 2,500 New Zealand women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and with breast cancer being the most common female cancer, the Foundation is committed to continuing education.

The presentation is tailored in time and content to suit the needs of the individual group or organisation. It covers topics such as breast self-examination, breast cancer facts and statistics in New Zealand, myths, mammograms, risk factors, lifestyle choices and more. Plus time to have your questions answered.

A very informative free information pack is available for each participant. This includes our very popular Breast Book and Priorities in Breast Awareness card, Health and Fitness leaflet and more…

Meet Our Educators…

Ginny Harwood – NZRN

Ginny Harwood is a registered nurse with over 25 years experience in primary health care, including three years with the National Screening Unit. She has a particular interest in womens health, and as breast cancer is one of the most urgent health issues facing women and families in New Zealand today, she feels very motivated to reach as many people as possible with key life-saving messages

Valerie Pennick – PG Dip Bus (Health Management), Dip RT

Valerie is a qualified radiation therapist who joined the Foundation after 30 years working in oncology positions which have spanned the clinical, management and education domains in Australia, Canada, the USA and New Zealand. As a radiation therapist, Valerie has delivered radiation therapy to many thousands of breast cancer patients. Many of these patients have been successfully treated, particularly those whose breast cancer has been detected early. Therefore, a key message of Valerie's as she speaks about breast health and breast cancer throughout New Zealand is that, "early detection is the best protection for surviving a diagnosis of breast cancer. A mammogram enables early detection as it can pick up a breast cancer before it can be felt".
