History

In 1992 Evelyn Lauder of Estée Lauder Companies made a commitment to the fight against breast cancer and launched the first Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign at Estée Lauder counters across the United States. Subsequently Estée Lauder Companies throughout the world were invited to join this movement by establishing a Breast Cancer Foundation in their respective country. As a result of this The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1994 with the launch of its first annual October Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.

Global Illuminations

In 2000 The Estée Lauder Companies launched its annual “Global Landmarks Illumination Initiative”, in which historic landmarks are illuminated in pink lights on October 1st to focus worldwide attention on breast cancer. More than 200 prominent landmarks in more than 40 countries around the world have participated, including The Empire State Building in USA, Kensington Palace in London, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, Table Mountain in Cape Town and the Sky Tower in Auckland.

SKYCITY Auckland’s Sky Tower was New Zealand’s inaugural monument and each year is the first in the world to be lit pink, at the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 2006 New Zealand buildings and landmarks include:

  • SKYCITY Auckland’s Sky Tower
  • Calder & Lawson House of Travel – Hamilton
  • Riverside Entertainment Centre containing SKYCITY Hamilton
  • Rotorua’s City Focus Lights
  • Gisborne’s Clock Tower
  • New Plymouth’s Clock Tower
  • Wellington Michael Fowler Centre
  • Canterbury Museum – Christchurch
  • Christchurch Art Gallery
  • Christchurch Cathedral
  • Dunedin’s Municipal Chambers Clock Tower
  • Invercargill’s Water Tower

The Wizard of New Zealand (Christchurch) also lent a hand in 2002 by wearing pink robes on 2nd and 3rd October.

A Trusted Charity

In 2004 the Foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary with a hugely successful year and October Campaign. In just 10 years the work of The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation has leap-frogged into the list of Top Ten most trusted charities in New Zealand*.
*Readers Digest Most Trust Charities Survey, June 2004.

This confirms how important an issue breast cancer is in New Zealand, and how much has been achieved by the Foundation in a short time.

The Foundation when launched in 1994 consisted of a dedicated group of volunteers and supporters running an annual breast cancer awareness campaign in October. In 1999 a fulltime manager was employed and now together with a small team the Foundation provides nationwide activities including free community education, research, medical grants and scholarships, seminars, a breast cancer patient register and advocacy, all year round on a national basis.
